Mapping the kiln (2019)

It is almost impossible to achieve the same atmosphere and temperature at any place within the ceramic oven. I wanted to take advantage of this fact.

The project “Mapping the Kiln” explores the spectrum of a single ceramic red recipe, applied to multiple porcelain tiles, fired at different locations within a single traditional Chinese tunnel oven.

In this way, I create a ceramic image of the oven atmosphere of this specific firing which is revealed by the chemical reactions of the glaze in the differently coloured results. It shows the enormous potential of a single glaze fired in a single kiln and a single combustion process. The work shows how much the technology influences ceramic colour.
