Growing Absence (2024)

Negative forms of reliefs show different historical expanses of one of Norway's largest glaciers, of the Hardangerjökul. The shapes of the reliefs are reminiscent of the outlines of lichens. They represent lichens of the species Rhizocarpon geographicum, also known as map lichens, which have been mapped in the Hardangervidda.

The growth of the map lichen indicates by its size the period of absence of glacial ice at its growing location. 5 topographies so far map the retreat of Hardangerjökul at 5 different times in the past in the growth of five lichens. They are a memorial to the growing absence.
