Earth Gradient
Man-made global warming is causing permafrost soils to dry out. The carbon stored in them escapes into the atmosphere and changes our environment and creates new “landscapes".
The work Earth Gradients examines how natural phenomena caused by humans show parallels to cultural phenomena. What is the relationship between nature and culture? Is climate change natural or a cultural product? Can the artist map processes of change in nature and thus immortalize them for (possible) future generations? Can natural phenomena that are man-made become a cultural phenomenon? She transfers climate change to the firing process.
18 Ceramic wall panels show the spectrum of earth colors, mapped in Medicine Hat, Canada. Soil colors give us information about the composition of the soil and allow us to draw conclusions about the atmosphere. One series shows the atmospheric carbon content of today, the second series shows the atmospheric carbon content predicted in 50 years' time.
New landscapes emerge and they show at the same time the transience of our color spectrum and our current environment.
